UNC Candidate David Nakhid Called Trinidad Police The Enemy - Later Apologises

UNC's David Nakhid Apologise for Calling T&T Police The Enemy

General election is due this calendar year in Trinidad and Tobago and the United National Congress (UNC) candidate for the Tunapuna constituency, David Nakhid, has retracted his statements that the police service was the enemy.

This apology comes after heavy public criticism by the Police Commissioner Gary Griffith who described Nakhid sentiments as irresponsible and advised that such behaviour should not be condoned by someone who hopes to become a Minister of Government.
In response, Nakhid explained that he was speaking from a place of emotions.
“My statement, published on Wednesday on the Wired868 online platform, came from a place of heartbreak as I looked on at what was happening in Port-of-Spain. I wanted to speak on behalf of these communities, who at this time may be feeling helpless that their voices are unheard. Given what transpired last weekend, some of these persons, who are hurt and angry, may see the police as the enemy. That was the context of my statement. I do not believe the police are the enemy.”
The UNC candidate also called for unity between the public and police service and said he was sorry.
“I wish to apologise to the honest, hard-working members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, (TTPS) all of whom I am sure were hurt and discouraged by the statement. Rest assured, I have confidence in the good men and women of the TTPS but it is also clear that we need to dialogue in order to engender peace and equity in our society.”
