Seven International Soca Artistes You Should Know - 2018


The genre of Soca music, is one that brings people together in unity all over Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and the world. The strong rhythmic festive nature of the music infused with drums and loud basslines puts people in fete mood and get them ready for a Trini style Caribbean Carnival party. Here are seven Soca artistes in 2018 who are leading the global charge to make soca music more popular in the world today. Any of these seven artistes can successfully headline any show or fete anywhere in the world today.


#1 Machel Montano
When discussing Soca music, Machel Montano‘s (also known as "Double M" and "The Monk" ) name will always be at the centre of discussion. Throughout his career spanning over 30 years, Montano has given the Soca world hit song for every carnival season and is noted as one of the most successful Soca acts in history. The King of Soca has a long list of Soca hits that expands from one generation of supporters to another generation of new supporters. To name some of his well known hits throughout his career we can point to the 1990's to 'Big Truck and 'Music Farm' to the 2000's with  'One More Time' and 'Bend Over' and to his recent hits 'Like Ah Boss' and 'Fast Wine'.
He has legendary collaborations in his catalogue that include collabs with Pitbull, Dawg E Slaughter, Shaggy, Major Lazer, Buju Banton, Bunji Garlin, Alison Hinds, Busta Rhymes, Sizzla, Destra Garcia and many more International acts. Additionally he has been a major influence in the growth of other top Soca acts, such as Patrice Roberts and Farmer Nappy




#2 Kes 
Kes the Band is a soca group who formed themselves in 2005. They quickly became a household name in Trinidad and the rest of the Soca world. The band consists of three Dieffenthaller brothers, along with their life-long friend and guitarist Riad Boochoon. The soulful vocals of lead singer Kess and the band’s style along with their electric mixture of calypso, reggae and rock have captured the hearts and minds of many Soca lovers around the world. Their smash hit ‘Wotless’ is one of the most successful Soca songs of the decade, and in 2018 they followed up 'Wotless' with an even bigger hit Hello -Hello -Hello! 



#3 Bunji Garlin 
In the late 1990s, a new sub genre of Soca emerged in Trinidad and Tobago called ragga soca (the blending of Trinidad’s Soca with Jamaican dancehall). The leader of then ragga soca movement was Soca superstar Bunji Garlin. Garlin also known as the Viking is one of the genre’s few successful crossover artists, having had huge international success with his collaborations with Major Lazer, Machel Montano and many other acts. In 2013 the Viking released 'Differentology' which is still one of the most popular crossover Soca hits in the world today. His recent hit song 'Big Bad Soca' is having major success throughout the Soca world today.



#4 Voice
Aaron Voice St Louis is one of the youngest and most talented Soca artistes in the industry today. A brilliant writer who has written a handful of hits for fellow Soca artistes and came into his own as an artiste when he won the 2016 International Soca Monarch in Trinidad with his hit song 'Cheers To Life'. As the youngest artiste in history to win the title of International Soca Monarch, he is one of the artistes who has given new life to the genre with his international sound and very unique style. In recent years he has continued to release hit after hit for Soca lovers to enjoy. Hits such as 'Far From Finished', 'Full of Vibe' and 'Year For Love'.



#5 Patrice Roberts
Patrice Roberts is another Trini Soca star and was a member of Soca icon  Machel Montano’s HD soca band. Her career took off when she won the 1995 Sangre Grande Junior Calypso Monarch competition at the tender age of nine. Patrice melodic and soulful voice is known by many people in the Caribbean because of her 2005 hit single ‘The Island’, which featured her cousin Bunji Garlin. This song made her a household name in Trinidad and Tobago and was used for promotional commercials by the Ministry of Tourism in Trinidad and Tobago. In recent years she has released a wave of hit tunes such as 'Old And Grey', 'Big Girl Now' and 'Sweet Fuh Days'.


#6 Destra Garcia 
Destra Garcia, known as The Queen of Bacchanal in the Soca world is the female star soca artiste with the biggest fan base in the world today. Her sexy musical persona, provocative stage performances and fiery personality has helped pushed her career to the top and helped kept her at the top for more than a decade. Her biggest Soca hits to date is 'Lucy' and "Its Carnival' which was a collaboration with Soca icon Machel Montano. During Carnival seasons in the Caribbean and North America, Soca lovers look forward in excitement to Destra Garcia's performances


#7 Nailah Blackman 
Nailah Blackman is one of the refreshing new faces in the Soca industry today. At just 19 years old, the granddaughter of the creator of Soca (Ras Shorty), she has already made a name for herself. Her 2017 hit single ‘Workout’ with Kes captured the attention of Trinidadians and the rest of the Soca world. After hearing her smh hit 'Baila Mami' many Soca lovers believe she has the style and unique singing voice to crossover successfully into the mainstream. She recently collaborated with dancehall star Shenseea for her hit song 'Badishh' and followed up with another hit tune 'Sokah'. Trinbagonians are looking forward to seeing her have an incredible music career.
