The Day Trinidad & Tobago Rebuked The United States

T&T Prime Minister Fires Right Back At The United States

It was Friday June 21st, 2019 when Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister expressed sharp disapproval to a report by the US State Department that placed the  twin island  republic among several Caribbean countries not in compliance with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking in persons (TIP). This is a report developed by the United States state department

The report  places Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, Haiti, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago in Tier 2

But Prime Minister  Dr Keith Rowley  speaking at a ceremony here last Friday, wondered whether or not the country that gave the twin island Republic a failing grade was doing much better with its own migration and TIP situation.

Rowley said, “Well if I was marking their paper what would I give them? They have the same problem we have – thousands of migrants rushing your border wanting to come into your country because they see a greener grass on your side than on their side. That is the number one political issue in America,” Rowley said.

“Children are dying on the (American) border, some of them in cages, hundreds of people in a room that is built for 10, the temperature is 41 degrees and, of course, they have a bigger military, they have a bigger security system, they have an army, a navy, an air force and they got a bigger treasury than Trinidad and Tobago,” he said, asking “how have they handled their situation better than ours?”

The US embassy responded by saying they look forward to working with T&T government on fighting crime and against universal human rights. Rowley's rebuke of the American developed report by accusing them of hypocrisy was received with praise by Trinis at home and abroad.

  1. He most definitely called the US out on their repulsive and incapable manner of handling the same situation on their borders. It's nothing less than inhumane. Trinis have many problems, but in comparison we handle this situation like we are wearing the 243 year old independence pants that the US is wearing. We are toddlers compared. Our grade is not on the scale of these continents. We deserve an A for what we do. It's flawed....yes!It's needs more calculation for the future...yes! But can we copy and paste from the US expertise? I tend to differ. We need to recalculate when we compare empires to islands.
