Trinidad and Tobago Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she is excited but not anxious about the 2020 general election.

August 10 was announced yesterday (Friday July 03rd) by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley as the date for the 2020 general election.

Persad-Bissessar however said she has several concerns which she hoped will be duly addressed.

Her main concern is the closed borders and thousands of citizens who may be disenfranchised and not have the opportunity to return home to vote. 

However she has expressed optimism that the Government will re-open the borders in July as she claims this is what any “sensible” government would do. She pointed out that Barbados is reopening its borders on July 12.

Given the Covid-19 virus this year  2020 general elections scheduled for August 10th  will be an election without mass meetings in the constituencies as has been the traditional environment for campaigning in Trinidad and Tobago

Persad-Bissessar said the UNC has already hit the ground and started campaigning and it has also had virtual meetings and its candidates in the marginal constituencies have been on the ground.

She said the campaign this election season will be a different one, adding that a lot of money will be saved as funds will not have to be spent on hosting rallies.

“Instead I think this election will be one to one,” she said, reiterating that UNC candidates have been on the ground.

As of today Saturday (July 4th) the UNC has named mostly the candidates who will contest the marginal seats. The full slate of candidates is expected to be named tomorrow (Sunday), Persad-Bissessar said.
